** Allamah, Founder of the Bilal Muslim Mission **
Sayyid Saeed Akhtar Rizvi (1927-2002) was an Indian-born Twelver Shia scholar and one of the most influential propagators of Shia Islam in East Africa. Born in Gopalpur in the Bihar state of India, he received a traditional religious education at seminaries in Patna and Banaras before dedicating his life to religious teaching, writing, and missionary work.
In 1959 he moved to Tanzania, where he founded the Bilal Muslim Mission, an organization devoted to teaching the Twelver Shia creed and to serving African converts to Islam. He served as its chief missionary and built it into a lasting institution active across East Africa. He was granted ijazahs (authorizations) in Hadith, Ahkam, and Fiqh by fourteen Grand Ayatollahs.
A remarkably prolific author, Rizvi wrote around 125 to 140 books over his lifetime on subjects ranging from theology and jurisprudence to comparative religion, history, tafsir, hadith, and biography. His works appeared in English, Urdu, Arabic, and Kiswahili, with the majority written in English, making Shia teachings accessible to a wide international readership. He was fluent in Urdu, English, Arabic, Persian, and Swahili.
He died in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on 20 June 2002. His scholarly and institutional legacy, especially the Bilal Muslim Mission and his English-language books, continues to be widely referenced and reprinted.
