** Twelver Shia Mujtahid and Scholar (Ustad al-Ulama) **
Syed Muhammad Yar Shah Naqvi Najafi (1913-1990) was a Pakistani Twelver Shia mujtahid and religious scholar from Alipur in the Muzaffargarh district of Punjab. After completing his secondary education in 1932, he pursued Islamic studies at institutions including Baab-ul-Uloom in Multan and Jamia Fathia in Lahore, before traveling to the holy city of Najaf, Iraq, for advanced religious training. There he studied under prominent Shia teachers and received Ijaza-e-Ijtihad (permission to exercise independent juristic reasoning) from several of them.
On returning to Pakistan he settled for a time in Jalalpur and then in his home town of Alipur, where in 1961 he founded the seminary Jamia Ilmiya Dar-ul-Huda Muhammadia, serving as its principal and teacher. He is remembered as one of the leading Shia jurists of Pakistan in his era; the scholar Dr. Sakhawat Hussain regarded his standing in Pakistan as comparable to that of Shaykh al-Tusi in Iraq.
He died on 20 December 1990 in Lahore and was buried in Alipur. His sons and grandsons continued his scholarly tradition, and his notable students included Hussain Bakhsh Jarra, Muhammad Hussain Najafi, and Hassan Raza Ghadeeri.
