Biography

Lebanese Twelver Shia scholar born in Najaf, Iraq. Studied under prominent religious leaders and returned to Lebanon in 1969. Became president of the Supreme Shiite Council in 1994. Known for advocating Christian-Muslim coexistence, stating "there is no Lebanon without its Christians and there is no Lebanon without its Muslims." Supported military resistance against Israeli forces.
