Early Life
Born 1942 in Jalandhar, British India; family relocated to Gujranwala, Pakistan after the 1947 Partition.
Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Basheer Hussain al-Najafi (born 1942 in Jalandhar, British India) is a Pakistani-born Twelver Shia marja' and one of the "Big Four" Grand Ayatollahs resident in Najaf, Iraq, alongside Ali al-Sistani. Following the 1947 partition of British India, his family relocated to Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan, where he received his initial religious education before moving to Iraq for advanced studies in the early 1960s.
He is among the very few Pakistanis to have attained the highest rank of Grand Ayatollah in Shia Islam, and was one year senior in seminary standing to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. On 6 January 1999 he survived an assassination attempt, reportedly by Fedayeen Saddam gunmen using a hand grenade, which killed three people and injured several members of his seminary.
